Ante in poker keeps a network of players to instantly begin the betting process with a soft competition.  Ante in poker gives some solid reason for players to play a responsible pre-flop.  Without ante, the playing would be just hunt for free cards or free card information.  Ante is a way to make the card information costly.  This is also a method to keep players head up unless they have something worthy with them.

In short, ante is like a basic price tag in an auction, the buyer with the maximum capacity to bet eventually makes the wining; however in poker, the buyer that calls the auction should have enough money to call and also they should have a worthy reason to call, the worthy reason to call is nothing but a hand that has met with the pot splitting criteria.

Ante is a method to involve players that are serious about playing in the game.  Any game that is played by aimless players will be a waste.  Ante is a kind of investment and anyone that is making an investment is sure to be serious about playing.  For the several reasons stated above ante in poker is considered important and sensible.
